Francis Lawrence Filby was born in Newmarket on 8th January 1909 (Newmarket Q1-1909 3b:427), the son of Francis Alfred and Lilian Catherine FILBY (née LAWRENCE).

1911 census...Aged 2, he was at The Woolpack Inn, Drapery Row, Newmarket with his father Francis Alfred FILBY [33], a publican born in Kentford; his mother Lilian Catherine [25] born in Woolwich, London and sisters Florence Lilian [3] born in Kentford and Doris Maud [7 months] born in Newmarket.

He married Marjorie WAKE, (born Thornham), in Newmarket in Q4-1940. She was later in Moulton. Probate for his will gave his address as "Cock Inn, Kentford.
The Filby family had a great number of members as publicans in East Anglia right up to the end of the 20th century, including the Cock and the neighbouring inn, the Fox and Ball. A younger brother, Harry, was landlord at the Cock for many years after WW2.

In the 1939 register Francis was barman, (assisting father) at the Cock Inn, Kentford, father [4-12--1878] landlord; mother [14-2-1886]; widowed grandmother Caroline FILBY [4-8-1847]; sister Irene [31-8-1921]; brother Ronald B [30-12-1924] just left school. There are 2 closed records.


The memorial plaque has him in the Leicestershire Regiment, CWGC have Northamptonshire Regiment Yet to find exactly what the battalion were doing that day.They had a bad day earlier, on 14th with 28 killed. The 1st Northants had 7 killed on the 24th June, 4 are buried in Imphal in India and 3 are named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar
